Carbon Farming for a Sustainable and Climate-Neutral Future
The Carbon Farming MED project supports Mediterranean countries in meeting the EU’s 2035 climate targets, with a particular focus on achieving climate neutrality in agriculture. The initiative promotes resilient and sustainable agricultural production systems by enabling farmers to adopt carbon farming as a green business model, generate additional income, optimize regenerative farming and agroforestry practices, and participate in the carbon credit market.
The main outcome of the Carbon Farming MED project is the development of the first cross-border platform in the Mediterranean dedicated to supporting the buying and selling of carbon credits. The platform is designed to promote carbon farming as a viable green business model, facilitate the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and support the EU’s climate-neutrality goals by enhancing carbon removals.
Develop a Carbon Farming Framework
Adapt strategies to regional conditions and integrate best regenerative practices. A comprehensive monitoring, reporting and verification system will help ensure both profitability and long-term sustainability.
Establish a Mediterranean Carbon Offset Market
Launch the first regional market for carbon credit trading, providing a structured platform for reliable transactions.
Develop a Technology Platform
Create an IT platform to support carbon credit verification processes, facilitate farmers’ access to the market and enable transactions between buyers and sellers.
Implement Best Practices
Adapt and promote regenerative farming techniques that increase soil organic carbon, helping make carbon farming a viable business model for farmers.
The partnership includes institutions from Spain (Balmes University Foundation, UVIC-UCC; Azolla Projects), Italy (Council for Agricultural Research and Economics, CREA), Greece (Technical University of Crete, TUC), France (Agrofood Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre Sud, CRITT IAA Sud; Euroregion Pyrenees Mediterranean, EPM; European Agroforestry Federation, EURAF), Slovenia (Institute for Health and the Environment, IZO), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Center for Energy, Environment and Resources, CENER 21).
The project is coordinated by the BETA Technology Centre of UVIC-UCC, ensuring effective coordination and integration of all project activities.
The Carbon Farming MED project is co-funded by the European Union.
The total value of the Carbon Farming MED project is EUR 2,789,472.36, of which EUR 2,231,577.88 is expected to be co-financed through the Interreg programme. IZO is eligible for EUR 283,985.20 in grant funding.
Within the project, IZO serves as the Communication Leader and leads Work Package 2, which focuses on testing agroforestry and regenerative farming techniques. In addition, IZO leads the following key activities:
Adapting the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for carbon credits to the Mediterranean region.
Developing guidelines based on analyses of good practices from other countries.
Preparing guidelines and recommendations.
Raising awareness and managing online communication through digital and social media.
IZO is also involved in a range of other project activities, including research on carbon farming and the adaptation of agricultural business models to incorporate carbon credits. As a Work Package Leader, IZO also plays an important coordinating role within the project.
The expected project results linked to IZO’s role include the successful adaptation of the MRV system for carbon credits to the Mediterranean region, the development of clear and practical guidelines based on analyses of good practices from other countries, and the preparation of recommendations to support more sustainable farming practices.
In addition, we aim to increase awareness and stakeholder engagement through targeted communication activities, contributing to greater visibility of the project, its activities and its results.
